Synopsis: A collection of three connected webcomics centered around the singular setting of District 96, a place famous for its cuisine. A hidden magic flows through this portion of the city, controlled by the mysterious owner, Rasmus Gouman. Each of the three comics centers around a different group of characters, but all of them appear in each other’s comics. Stolen Tastes and Offers run concurrently, with events that affect each other, while District 96 follows up some months afterward. It is a story and character development heavy comic that combines feedism and kink scenarios with the plot.

The artist gives a recommended reading order of switching between Stolen Tastes and Offers (“Stolen Tastes, Chapters 1-3 first. Then Offers, Chapters 1-6 Act One. Then Stolen Tastes, Chapter 4 and end it off with Offers, Chapter 6 Act 2” from the FAQ) then moving on to District 96. I read Stolen Tastes and then Offers in full with minimal confusion, as unanswered questions were then answered in the next comic. Their recommendation however is in chronological order so you may want to go with their suggestion.

This one is a very big project that is still in progress. While these are three comics collected under the banner of Tastes Comics, I’ll be reviewing them all in one go. It’s hard to talk about any one of them without referencing the others. And while I won’t be going through each story beat for beat, there will be some spoilers here for each story. I’ll mark where major spoilers are. I will also note, I had read Offers and Stolen Tastes some time in the past, but it has been a while so I re-read them before writing this review.

I know that the warnings at the start are a little heavier than some of the others I’ve posted about, so I’ll be specific about which stories contain which. I would say that so far, Offers contains the lion’s share of the darker themes.

For my quick take on the whole thing; This is exactly the sort of story I’d like to see more of! It has complex characters with individual motivations, character development to attach the kink situations to, and dramatic beats to move the story forward. I like straight to the point kink content just fine. But it’s nice to see something more fleshed out with full characters and plots. My review is for the comic as it currently is as of today’s date. But I’ll be happily reading future updates.

Stolen Tastes

Stolen Tastes is primarily what I would describe as a romantic drama. It has the lowest amount of kink-tinged content out of the three stories but does have plenty of cute bigger characters and weight and body acceptance are central themes. The story follows barista Julian and his encounter with the handsome but heavily controlled Mason. Mason’s life is heavily monitored by Sebastian, whose connection is at first mysterious to Julian. Sebastian forbids Mason from ordering coffee, from eating sweets, and even from speaking to others without his permission. Sebastian sneaks his phone number to Julian on a napkin as they talk, kicking off the events of the story.

Julian wonders about Mason’s situation while getting to know him in secret, escaping Sebastian’s notice. Mason meanwhile wonders if Julian doesn’t remember meeting him in the past. Julian and Mason’s relationship has a nice progression to it that feels very sweet. While Mason doesn’t gain weight in the story, there is still a sweet portrayal of food as a show of caring for someone, with Julian trying to encourage Mason to ignore the unhealthy restrictions that Sebastian has placed on him to maintain his slim figure.

More specific thoughts with spoilers:

Mason runs a fashion company with Sebastian, who is later revealed to be his step brother, and has been pressured to slim down to model the clothes for their ads and match Sebastian in his idea of conveying “perfection”. It’s a good theme given the nasty history the fashion industry has had and still has on people’s views of weight. There are quite a few moments in the story reflecting on how being shamed for their weight has affected both Mason and Julian at different points in their life. So know going in that there is some angst, even if the message itself is body positive.

The fashion aspect isn’t heavily leaned into but serves as a backdrop to Mason’s conflicts in his life. Much of it stems from Sebastian (and Mason) struggling to fulfill his father’s vision for the company that goes against the ethos of District 96 itself. There are comments about them not making plus sized clothing, expanding their lines into weight loss products, and how the residents of the area skew heavier. They couldn’t support this company even if they did like their products. Even Mason himself wouldn’t have been able to wear them at the initial size he was before Sebastian began to control his life through authority and the power granted to him by the deal with Rasmus.

I appreciate the story’s portrayal of Mason’s depression and Julian’s emotional struggles too. I think the flashbacks to when they met when they were younger were very sweet and had a nice parallel to how easily they clicked again even if Julian didn’t remember Mason at first. And while Sebastian is an asshole, I wound up feeling sorry for him too. I think in his own way, he believed he was doing what was good for Mason. He cared for him enough not to want him to share in the consequences of the failed deal at least, which is more than his own family did for him. Sebastian was pressured into a position he didn’t want, and passed that pressure on to his step-brother. It’s sad, and I’m curious to see where their story continues in District 96.

Offers

Would it be a stretch to describe Cole as a Yandere feeder? He certainly toes the line, though he’s never shown to be violent.

Offers leads into much denser world building than Stolen Tastes, explaining some of the more mysterious aspects of Sebastian’s deal with Rasmus and just what is going on with the more magical cast that appears between all of the more mundane everyday people.

96 resides, to work his way up in his career. He is also a gainer, though not confirmed to be a feedee since he seems content to enjoy eating by himself. He has an admirer, Cole, who... Okay, so Cole is a stalker. He knows Token’s schedule and enjoys showing up at his favorite spots to admire him while he eats. Token is aware that he sees him a lot, but not that he is deliberately following him. Cole yearns to be Token’s feeder and to have him for his own and Token is just minding his own business. The man just wants to eat his cheesecake in peace!

Cole happens to be watching when Token is approached by a man he doesn’t know, Rasmus in disguise. Ras presents Token with a mysterious pink drink, promising it will make him bigger than he dreamed of. Neither of them know that strange potion will be the thing that leads them both to become deeply involved with the inner workings of the District.

This one is definitely not romantic like Stolen Tastes, focusing mainly on the increasingly uneasy relationship dynamic between the two and Token’s growing recklessness with the power he gains. Weight gain and feeding are very central to this story so there are a lot of kink scenes mixed in with the story at large. This one also features the plot points involving magical substances that affect Token’s state of mind, both taken willingly and sometimes unknowingly.

The first two chapters of this comic are available in Spanish on the artist’s DeviantArt page.

More thoughts with spoilers:

My favorite part about this one is definitely our two leads. Both of them are very imperfect, with varying levels of actual malice behind their actions at different parts of the story. While Token might view shifting some of his weight off on unsuspecting people who irritate him as harmless, Cole seems well aware that a lot of the things he himself does are wrong. Token enjoys being fed, being cared for, and yet Cole always finds ways to try to push past his boundaries. Always needs a little more. Greedy in a way different from Token. Meanwhile Token is in his own way using Cole, happy to let him take care of everything for him while he enjoys the new perks of serving Ras and getting to put on weight like he wanted, despite not wanting to be serious with him. Cole is convenient and already in on the secret of magic by that point, so why not?

Well, Token finds out why not. Where Token wants to be big, having been put in a position to gain weight as he pleases under Ras’s orders, Cole wants Token big. He’s upset when he gains weight himself, yet sees no limit for Token’s even when Token becomes frustrated with the difficulty of getting around. His fantasy seems to be of Token to be immobile, unable to leave his apartment. And he’s content to do whatever need be done to keep him growing even once he decides he’s had enough. Ras too accommodate this, needing Token to get as large as he can within the given timeframe so he can have him transfer that weight to someone he is saving it for. Who and why? You’ll have to read for that part since it’s a rather big reveal I don’t think needs spoiled for this review. But know there are actually two scenes in this story where rapid weight gain is used as a horror device, relating to characters who absolutely hate the idea of gaining weight. I think it makes for a good contrast, comparing the joy of gainer characters versus the feeling of lack of control.

Outside of these aspects of the story, more information about the city’s magic is introduced, along with Theodore, who will be one of the POV characters in District 96. For now, know that he’s around and he has a brief encounter with Ras after receiving a vial of the appetite enhancing potion from Cole.

One point in the story I do want to touch on that initially gave me mixed feelings was the couple of chapters spent at Token’s family home. I was initially caught off guard by the inclusion of Token’s brother and their shared interest in gaining. Nothing sexual was included, but I guess being clotheslined in the past with sudden sibling relationships in comics had me find it suspect. However, I feel since the comic isn’t entirely based around fetishes, I eventually came around to this inclusion. Token’s dad is into fitness because he used to be heavier, and has become the father equivalent of an Almond Mom. The type of parent to reflect their own anxieties about their weight and sometimes old fashioned views on appearance onto their children. Meanwhile his sons have an entirely opposite view on being fat, while their mother is mostly ambivalent but leans more toward the boys’ opinion.

I feel this portion of the story was a very human one and wanted to mention it to encourage any readers to give it a chance and to know it doesn’t go anywhere particularly taboo. It’s kind of a common trope as well within this particular kink for family members to appear. It could be because it’s a common shared experience, to have some memory of a family member shame you for your weight at some point in your life or inadvertently make you feel ashamed of it. It’s emotionally damaging even if you don’t share their views on body image. I don’t see anything wrong with exploring those feelings and situations through stories that also have kink scenarios.

Reading some of the author’s Q&A posts as well, Token’s brother Finn has no sexual feelings about gaining at all. I know I mentioned in a blog post once that there is a high number of asexual artists who make BHM content, so it was nice to read about their experiences as well. If you want to know more about the behind the scenes of their comic and their views on the characters, I recommend checking out their Bluesky where they post extra art and questions from readers.

District 96

And now we’re up to the current run of the comic, District 96. It takes place about a year after the previous entries, and has a very different start in that it has a light novel style prologue. For anyone unfamiliar, light novels are written like novels, but with occasional illustrations cut in among the text. In this instance, the prologue introduces Theodore’s family and his sister’s interest in finding out more about the source of the magic in District 96. Theodore is accepted by her coven and asked to personally look into the matter since he had a brief encounter with the man at the center of it all, only to lose his memory of the event afterward. So Theodore is sent back to Meridien.

When Chapter 1 begins, it is back into comic format and follows the perspective of Finn, Token’s brother who was introduced in Offers. Token has promised him a position as a baker at an upscale cafe in District 96, prompting him to move to Meridian officially. He meets back up with his old best friend, a somewhat reclusive man named Kier. Things are sweet as they settle back into their friendship together, and Kier invites Finn to stay over at his home. It is then that he meets Kier’s newest neighbor. Theodore!

Mentioning this was mostly an excuse to show this panel of Theodore. Nice.

The story isn’t in deep enough to have too many huge revelations yet (save for one) but it has set up some good intrigue while making time for character interactions. Theodore’s boyfriend Ferris who appeared briefly throughout Offers is given more backstory and Finn is a fun protagonist to follow as he’s much more happy-go-lucky than either of the previous protagonists. Kier and Finn’s interactions are very cute as well. It’s fun that each branch has had such variety in the characters who lead it. It’s not always about Finn though, as Token is checked in on as well.

Spoilers after here:

I haven’t mentioned what kind of magic user Rasmus is since I found the reveal to be fun in itself. But this last chapter has also introduced another kind. I’m very fond of demon characters and the designs of Posh and Cypress are really endearing. Pastel hair, a bit of frilly Ouji fashion sense about Posh, Cypress’s pretty eyelashes and beauty mark despite being huge and imposing. Love those guys and can’t wait to see them again.

Sebastian has made a return and I’m so curious about what direction this is going to take for him. The poor guy just can’t catch a break. I guess he did build up a lot of bad karma but maybe he can still turn it around. You know, without getting his soul stolen by demons.

And as I write this, Chapter 04 currently has a single upload, implying that we’ll get to see just what happened to Cole after Token’s deal with Ras resolved a year ago. I love a good nasty guy character, and I love to see them get comeuppance too. Can’t wait for the next update!
